Whitby View

North Yorkshire Moors Railway steam train SR 926 Repton leaves Whitby along the Esk Valley line to Grosmont and Pickering. The photograph was taken from the high level road bridge overlooking the River Esk, a boat yard and the harbour. In the distance on the right stands Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff.

I love this photograph of steam out of Whitby. This is one of my favourite views in the North East, more so when there’s a steam train in it. Everything is in the photographer’s favour here, just the right amount of steam from the locomotive, nice fluffy white clouds in a blue sky and, most importantly, the tide is in. The reflections in the river are much more attractive than brown muddy banks. I’ll have to read the tide tables before I attempt this shot again! A great photograph of a beautiful view.
